Establishing a Green Mantle
The Garden City concept aims to
achieve a green mantle to provide shade and to keep the
environment cool. With rapid urbanisation and industrialisation
in the 1960s and 70s, much of the land was cleared for
development. Consequently, there was a proliferation of concrete
buildings and tarmac areas across the island. The government
recognised the benefits of trees in terms of providing shade,
reducing dust and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and helping
to "soften" the harshness of concrete structures. With
the aim of achieving a green mantle as quickly as possible,
fast-growing trees were selected. It was also during this time that the Tree-planting Campaign was implemented.
