Adding Dashes of Colour to the Landscape
While the task appeared seemingly simple, it was really an arduous one. For a colour impact to be visible, there must be mass planting of flowering shrubs and trees and they must flower in unison. However, the uniform climatic conditions in Singapore do not encourage this. After taking into account many factors, it was decided that masses of flowering shrubs be planted at strategic locations. Flowering shrubs were also planted on concrete structures such as flyovers, overhead pedestrian bridges and the balconies of high-rise buildings. With the mass flowering of shrubs on these structures, visible impact was achieved.
To widen the range of colours in the landscape, more flowering plants from the tropical belts have been introduced. The results of the introduction programmes in the 1970s and 1980s can be seen across the island today in the form of roadside vegetation.
