Commonly known as: Coral Tree, Saga

Origin: SE Asia

Description: A spreading hardwood up to 30m tall. Its small, yellowish flowers grow in dense drooping flower heads. The curved hanging pods, with a bulge opposite each seed, split open each into two twisted halves to reveal the scarlet pill-shaped seeds. 

 

Barringtonia asiatica (Lecythidaceae)

Nature: Dry Coast Tree

Commonly known as: Fish Poison Tree; Putat Laut, Butun (Malay)

Origin: Unknown

Description: A big spreading tree, which grows wild on sandy and rocky shores, though it grows well when planted inland. Flowers open at dusk but unfortunately drop at dawn the following morning. The fruit has a squarish base and tapers towards the tip like a truncated pyramid.

 

Bougainvillea hybrid (Nyctaginaceae)

Nature: Tendril Climber or scrambler

Commonly known as: Bougainvillea

Origin: Tropical South America

Description: Large, woody scramblers that grow in forests in tropical S.America. Here, they are usually cultivated as pot plants or trimmed bushes (esp. on overhead pedestrian crossings).

 

Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (Rhizophoraceae)

Nature: Tree of the Mangroves

Commonly known as: Bruguiera; Tumu Merah (Malay)

Origin: Unknown

Description: The calyx of the plant is scarlet, with 12-15 pointed lobes, and the seedling has a thick root-rudiment. After sticking in the mud, a taproot issues from its lower end. It has a buttressed trunk and numerous, many-branched aerial knee roots.
