Description: An upright short-lived plant with red or green stems and leafstalks, and red or white flowers. It often grows on the sites of previous fires, and hence its name.
Cerbera odollam (Apocynaceae)

Commonly known as: Poison Apple, Yellow-eyed Cerbera, Pong-pong
Origin: Unknown, presumably tropic mangroves
Description: Grows wild in mangroves but also thrives when planted on roadsides. It is small and spreading with neat and shiny leaves, and fruit and flowers to add interest. However, it is poisonous and the irritating sap is said to cause blindness.
Dillenia suffruticosa (Wormia suffruticosa)

Commonly known as: Shrubby Dillenia; Simpoh Air (Malay)
Origin: Unknown
Description: This plant grows up to 5m in height and has very characteristic cabbage-like, oval leaves. The red fruits open before dawn into several segments, exposing the red-fleshed seeds. They thrive on eroded hills but can also grow in swamp forests.
